Timber Harvest Establishment and Administration

Having a timber harvest is an exciting time for you as a landowner, it's setting up your forest for success going forward and the fruits of your labor paying off. Setting up a timber sale is dynamic process and no one property is the same just as no one landowner is the same, so with proper timber marking practices a timber harvest can generate multiple benefits for you.

Management Plans

Wisconsin offers a tax incentive program called Managed Forest Law (MFL). This program promotes sustainable forestry practices on private lands. Having land enrolled in the MFL program has several benefits to landowners. A big one is greatly reducing your property taxes, the others include giving you the landowner a tangible plan for your woods going into the future, it also opens the door to cost sharing programs which helps pay for projects such as habitat restoration and timber stand improvement projects. To enroll in the MFL, a plan is required to be written. This may seem like a daunting task when the plans are written for 25-50 years into the future. As a Certified Plan Writer (CPW) I help landowners interested in joining this program create a management plan to promote sound forestry, continues growing trees into the future and achieve their long term goals. The MFL program may not be suitable for everyone's needs and that is okay, but if you still want a plan to help with guidance using sound forestry a stewardship plan is a great option.

Having a management plan is like having a good map on a road trip. There is an end goal and getting there requires steps and like a road trip there are different routes to take, unexpected detours, or plans change. The same is true for managing a forest; there is an end goal and how you get there is different for everyone. Having a good written management plan that is both sustainable and goal oriented allows for unforeseen events to be handled proactively.

Timber Stand Improvement

Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) can mean many things but at its core it's improving the overall health of the forest ecosystem. By controlling invasive plants or doing crop tree release this helps increase value to the remaining trees and improves the overall health and diversity of the forest by allowing native plants to become established.

Wildlife Management

Forestry practices can have a significant impact on wildlife. When done properly, it can create a beneficial habitat for existing wildlife, increase browse, and establish new habitats to expand biodiversity. By implementing good forestry practices, we can help protect and preserve our natural environment for generations to come.
